Overview
Foil is a kitchen-organization app operated by Mirae Ventures LLC ("we," "us," or "our"). Foil helps you track expiration dates, scan grocery receipts, get AI recipe suggestions, share a kitchen with household members, and export your data.
This Privacy Policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. If anything here is unclear, please email support@getfoilapp.com.
Foil works fully without an account — your kitchen is stored locally on your device, and nothing is sent to our servers. Sign in only if you want to sync across devices, share a household, or access Premium features.
What we collect
Account information (only if you sign in)
- Email address (or Apple / Google account identifier if you use Sign in with Apple or Google)
- Display name, if you provide one
- Authentication tokens stored on the device's secure keychain
Kitchen content you create
- Food items you add manually or via receipt scan: name, category, storage location, expiration date, quantity, and notes
- Shopping list items and shopping trip history
- Meal plans
- Saved recipes
- Receipt photos: processed on your device for OCR; the photo itself is not uploaded to our servers
App settings and preferences
- Notification preferences (reminder timing)
- Default expiry windows by category
- Premium subscription status
- Household membership and roles
Subscription and purchase information
- If you subscribe to Foil Premium, your subscription status and entitlements are managed by RevenueCat and processed by Apple's App Store or Google Play. We never see or store payment card details.
Diagnostic and analytics data
- Anonymous app-usage events (which features are used, screen views, performance metrics) collected via PostHog. We do not collect contact lists, advertising identifiers, or precise location.
- Crash and error reports to help us fix bugs.
- You can opt out of analytics in Settings → Privacy.
How we use your information
- To provide core features — track expirations, scan receipts, generate recipes, send reminders
- To sync your kitchen across your signed-in devices
- To enable household sharing among the members you invite
- To process and renew your Premium subscription
- To improve the app via aggregate, anonymized analytics
- To respond when you contact us
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your data to train AI models. We do not run advertising in Foil.
Third-party services
Foil relies on a small number of trusted services to operate:
- Supabase — authentication and encrypted database storage for signed-in users (US-region hosting).
- OpenAI — receipt parsing and recipe generation. We send extracted text (not your receipt photo) to OpenAI's API. Per OpenAI's API terms, your inputs and outputs are not used to train OpenAI's models.
- Google ML Kit — on-device OCR text extraction from receipt images. ML Kit makes no network calls.
- RevenueCat — manages your Premium subscription state. Receives the same App Store / Google Play subscription identifier Apple or Google would surface.
- PostHog — privacy-respecting product analytics. Anonymous, opt-out available in Settings.
- Apple App Store / Google Play — subscription billing.
We work to share only the minimum data each service needs and never share your data for advertising.
Device permissions
Foil only asks for the permissions it needs:
- Camera — to scan a receipt with the in-app document scanner. The captured image stays on your device.
- Photo Library — to pick a receipt image from your gallery. Limited or full access both work; we only read what you select.
- Notifications — to send local expiration reminders. Foil does not send remote push notifications, marketing alerts, or anything that requires our server to push to your device.
- Face ID / Touch ID — optional, used only to unlock the app if you turn on biometric protection.
You can change any permission at any time in your device settings.
Sharing and household data
If you create or join a household, the following data syncs in real time across every member of that household:
- The shared inventory (food items)
- The shared shopping list
- Shopping trip history (including who shopped — labeled as "Shopped by [name]")
- Shared meal plans
Members can see who added or used items via the household activity log (a Premium feature). Personal preferences, sign-in details, and Premium status remain individual.
If a member leaves a household, ownership of any data they created is transferred to a remaining member so nothing is lost. The leaving member loses access to the shared kitchen immediately.
Data storage and security
- Local data is stored on your device using Apple or Android secure storage primitives.
- Cloud-synced data is stored on Supabase infrastructure in the United States, with row-level security ensuring only you (and your household members for shared data) can access it.
- All network traffic between Foil and our backend uses TLS encryption.
- Authentication tokens are kept in the iOS Keychain or Android Keystore.
- We use industry-standard administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect your information. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to keep yours safe.
Data retention and deletion
We keep your data for as long as your account is active. You can delete your data at any time:
- In-app: Settings → Account → Delete Account. Deletion is immediate and permanent.
- By email: write to support@getfoilapp.com from the address tied to your account; we'll process within 30 days.
Deleting your account removes your kitchen content, household memberships, sync history, and analytics identifier. Subscription billing is managed by Apple or Google — to stop being billed, also cancel your subscription via the App Store or Google Play.
We may retain limited data when required by law (for example, receipts for tax purposes, or records under legal hold).
Your rights
You can:
- Access your kitchen data — visible in the app at any time.
- Export your inventory and shopping history as CSV (Premium feature).
- Correct or update any item in your kitchen directly.
- Delete your account and all associated data, in-app or by email.
- Opt out of analytics in Settings → Privacy.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws like the GDPR (Europe), CCPA (California), or similar. To exercise any of these, email support@getfoilapp.com.
Children's privacy
Foil is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with information, please contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as Foil evolves. When we do, we'll post the updated version here with a new "Last updated" date. For material changes, we'll also notify you in the app or via email if you've signed in.
