Getting started
Do I need an account to use Foil?
No. Foil works fully without an account — your kitchen is stored locally on your device. Sign in only if you want to sync across devices, share a household, or access Premium features.
Which platforms does Foil support?
Foil is available for iPhone (iOS 17 and later) and Android. iPad runs the iPhone version. Sync works across all of your signed-in devices.
Receipt scanning
How do I scan a receipt?
- Tap the Cart tab at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Scan Receipt.
- Use the in-app camera to snap your receipt, or pick one from your Photo Library.
- Foil reads the items, prices, and storage locations and streams them in. Review and tap Add Items.
Tips for the best scan
- Lay the receipt flat on a contrasting surface — a dark counter under a light receipt works well.
- Fill the camera frame with the receipt; let the app's auto-detect handle the edges.
- If the receipt is long, no need to fold — Foil handles tall receipts.
- If a scan looks wrong, tap Retake rather than trying to edit every item — the next scan usually goes better.
Which stores does Foil recognize?
Most major U.S. grocery chains, including Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, HEB, Aldi, Costco, Target, Walmart, Kroger, Safeway, and many regional chains. If a store you shop at isn't reading well, email us and we'll improve coverage.
Expiration tracking and notifications
How does Foil decide when something expires?
Foil uses tailored expiry dates based on what each item actually is — spinach gets four days, apples get twenty-one. Dates can always be edited per item.
How do I turn on reminders?
Open Settings → Notifications and enable reminders. You can choose how many days ahead you'd like to be notified. Foil sends local notifications only — nothing is broadcast through any server.
Why didn't I get a notification?
- Check that notifications are enabled for Foil in iOS Settings → Notifications → Foil (or Android equivalent).
- Confirm Do Not Disturb / Focus modes aren't suppressing alerts during your reminder time.
- Foil only schedules notifications for items with future expiry dates. Past-due items don't fire new alerts.
AI recipes
How does Foil pick recipes?
Foil suggests recipes based on what's actually in your kitchen. Toggle Expiring soon to filter to recipes that use ingredients about to peak.
Are AI recipes safe to follow?
Recipes are AI-generated and meant as inspiration. Always use your own judgment for food safety, allergens, and cooking temperatures — we don't replace a doctor, dietitian, or food-safety guidance.
Household sharing
How do I share my kitchen with someone?
- Open Settings → Household.
- Tap Create Household.
- Share the invite link or QR code with up to 6 members.
- Once they accept, your inventory, shopping list, and meal plans sync in real time.
What happens if someone leaves the household?
Their access is revoked immediately. Any items they originally added stay in the household — ownership is transferred so nothing is lost.

How do I cancel my subscription?
- iPhone: Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → Foil → Cancel Subscription.
- Android: Google Play Store → Profile → Payments & Subscriptions → Subscriptions → Foil → Cancel.
Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period. Your Premium features stay active until then.
How do I restore a Premium purchase?
Open the Foil Premium screen and tap Restore Purchases. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID or Google account you used to subscribe.
Account, sign-in, and data
Can I use Foil without signing in?
Yes — every core feature works locally. Sign in only when you want sync, household sharing, or Premium.
What sign-in methods does Foil support?
Sign in with Apple, Sign in with Google, or email + password.
How do I export my data?
Premium subscribers can export inventory and shopping history as CSV files: Settings → Export My Data → Export. The system share sheet lets you save to Files, Drive, Mail, Numbers, or any other app.
Troubleshooting
The app crashed or feels stuck
- Force-quit the app and reopen.
- Confirm you're on the latest version (App Store / Play Store → Foil → Update).
- Restart your device.
- If the issue persists, email support@getfoilapp.com with your device model, OS version, and what you were doing when it happened.
Sync isn't working
- Check that you're signed in on both devices with the same account.
- Confirm both devices have a working internet connection.
- Sign out and back in on the device that's behind — the kitchen will re-pull from the server.
Receipt scanner returned the wrong items
You can edit any item before adding it. If a specific store consistently scans poorly, email us a sample receipt photo (with personal info redacted) and we'll improve coverage in a future release.
Delete your account
You can delete your Foil account, your kitchen data, and your sync history at any time, directly from the app:
- Open Settings → Account.
- Tap Delete Account.
- Confirm. Deletion is immediate and permanent.
If you can't sign in or otherwise can't reach the in-app option, email support@getfoilapp.com from the address tied to your account and we'll process the deletion within 30 days.
Deleting your account also cancels any associated Foil Premium subscription. To stop being billed, also cancel the subscription via the App Store or Google Play (see Premium above).
